Insight into the project.

Historically, Royal IHC had an indifferent and varied methodology for distributing vast amounts of client project data. With every piece of equipment that Royal IHC designed and built, they had an obligation to provide all technical documentation back to the client. Boxmodel were therefore tasked with providing a solution for managing and serving these vast amounts of engineering documentation in a way that was secure, easy to manage, easy to use, and easily accessible in online and offline environments. In addition, we needed to find a way to allow users to easily find documentation related to the specific part or general arrangement in a way that suited them.

The opportunity.

To store and access large amounts of files securely we needed a robust and industry-leading storage provider. We chose Microsoft Azure that allowed for high levels of security while at the same time making seamless integration of the documentation into user-facing applications possible. It was decided that both online and offline platforms would be supported, allowing the user to access documentation literally anywhere, be it on a vessel in the middle of the Atlantic with no reliable internet connection, or on a mobile phone at the airport.

Overall impact.

The end result greatly improved both the management of documentation and the end user's ability to access it. Administrators could upload bill of materials and lists of general arrangements from their internal systems as well as many thousands of associated files and have the new system automatically match files to the associated parts or general arrangements to generate a documentation suite. Boxmodel took this even further by implementing a 3D Model upload that allowed the end-user to browse the 3D Model and select parts to view information and associated documentation. End users were able to securely log in and browse and search for documentation both online and offline. The end solution provided a very secure and scalable platform for both Royal IHC administrators and the end users themselves.
